The Why

Swaddles are one of the shortest-lived baby categories — but somehow one of the most overbought.

They’re used in the newborn phase to help manage the startle reflex and support sleep, but many babies outgrow them within weeks or a few months.

While some newborns settle happily into a simple wrap, others break out within minutes. So this is one of those categories where baby temperament matters just as much as materials.

While we prioritise cleaner materials first, we’re also realistic. Those first days and weeks can be exhausting and sometimes the swaddle that actually works wins.

The Clean Bar

* GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the gold standard for organic textiles. It certifies not just the cotton itself, but the entire production process — including dyes and finishes. Not all "organic cotton" meets this level. Some brands use organic cotton fibres but don’t certify the full process and many include elastane (synthetic stretch fibre) to improve fit.

** Swaddling should stop once your baby shows signs of rolling.

The GoodCall

We tried all three.

In theory, a simple organic wrap is the cleanest option. In practice, we found traditional swaddling clunky — and when you’re sleep-deprived with a newborn, wrapping a wriggly baby at 2am can feel surprisingly stressful.

What actually worked for us was Love To Dream. Baby clearly preferred sleeping arms-up, with her hands close to her face and it was the first swaddle that genuinely made nights easier.

We also tried ergoPouch, which is the cleaner zip option, but baby still preferred the arms-up design.

This is one category where the “best” product is often simply the one your baby tolerates. Materially, Love To Dream isn’t the purest option — but in those early newborn weeks, practicality won for us.
